Topa um pão de queijo?Inviting, accepting and refusing

Learn to invite, accept and refuse politely in Brazilian Portuguese — and to say the time of a meeting (às, à, ao) — through a WhatsApp chat and a set of work e-mails.

Nota cultural

Read this before you start — it explains how invitations really work in Brazil

E no domingo?”

Language note

Three things you will need in this unit — read them before you start

1. Inviting, accepting and refusing
Informal (friends, family)Formal (clients, boss)
InvitingTopa…? / Que tal…? / Bora…?Gostaria de convidar você para… / Podemos marcar…? / Você aceita…?
AcceptingEu topo! / Combinado! / Pode contar comigo!Com prazer! / Sim, claro.
2. Saying the time of the meeting: às, à, ao

Hours are feminine (as horas), so a + as = às: às 8h, às 10h, às 7h30.

One o’clock is singular, so a + a = à: à uma (da tarde). The same goes for à meia-noite.

Meio-dia is masculine, so a + o = ao: ao meio-dia.

To ask, use A que horas…? In casual speech, people often just say Que horas?

3. Giving a reason: ter que + infinitive

When you refuse an invitation, ter que explains what you must do instead.

eutenho que
você / ele / ela / a gentetem que
nóstemos que
vocês / eles / elastêm que

Tenho que trabalhar às 7h30.
