In Portuguese, demonstrative pronouns tell you how far something is from the speaker and the listener. There are three distances — and they must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe.

Remember: match the demonstrative with the noun's gender. este livro (masc. sing.) · esta casa (fem. sing.) esses livros (masc. pl.) · essas casas (fem. pl.)
🗣️ How Brazilians actually speak: In everyday spoken Brazilian Portuguese, people tend to use esse / essa / isso for both speaker and listener — the strict three-way distinction is more common in formal writing. So if you ask "O que é isso na sua mão?" and a Brazilian responds "Isso é minha garrafa", that is completely natural, even though the object is right next to the speaker. You will not be wrong for using the full system, but don't be surprised when native speakers use esse / isso interchangeably for anything within reach.
