Grammar Note

Read this before doing the exercises.

Adjective agreement — gender. Variable adjectives change their ending to match the noun: -o (masc.) → -a (fem.). Invariable adjectives stay the same for both genders — these often end in -e, -l, -z, or -m.

Type Masculine Feminine Example
Variable alto alta Pedrinho é alto. Narizinho é alta.
Variable bonito bonita O sofá é bonito. A casa é bonita.
Invariable inteligente Ele é inteligente. Ela é inteligente.
Invariable gentil · feliz · jovem · alegre Dona Benta é muito gentil.
Intensifiers (placed before the adjective): muito = very  ·  um pouco = a little (usually a mild or negative trait)  ·  muito pouco = very little.

Dona Benta é muito querida. — Dona Benta is very dear.
Pedrinho é um pouco teimoso. — Pedrinho is a little stubborn.

Numa casinha branca, no Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, mora uma velhinha muito simpática. Ela se chama Dona Benta. Dona Benta é uma avó calma e muito querida. Ela adora contar histórias.

Dona Benta mora com a neta, Lúcia. Todos chamam a menina de Narizinho. Narizinho tem sete anos. Ela é morena e muito alegre. O primo dela, Pedrinho, é um menino da cidade. Ele é alto, corajoso e um pouco teimoso.

Emília é uma boneca de pano. Ela é pequena, muito falante e um pouco atrevida. O Visconde de Sabugosa é magro, sério e muito inteligente.

Exercise 6 — Write
Describe a person you like.
Describe a friend, a relative, or a favorite character. Include their appearance, two personality traits, and one thing they love. Use muito / um pouco / muito pouco at least twice.

Example: "A minha amiga Marina é alta, magra e morena. Ela é muito alegre e gentil, mas é um pouco teimosa. A Marina adora viajar."
