📖 Preposições de lugar — Location expressions

B uses two key location expressions: "lá em baixo daqueles livros" (underneath those books) and "em cima da mesa" (on top of the table). These are among the most useful location phrases in everyday Brazilian Portuguese.

em baixo de	underneath / below / under	As chaves estão em baixo dos livros. (The keys are under the books.)
na / no	in / on (contracted: em + a/o)	Na estante. / No quarto. (On the shelf. / In the bedroom.)
lá	over there (adds distance)	Lá em baixo daqueles livros. (Under those books over there.)
atrás de	behind	Está atrás da porta. (It's behind the door.)
na frente de	in front of	Está na frente do sofá. (It's in front of the sofa.)
perto de	near / close to	Está perto da janela. (It's near the window.)

💡 De + article contractions When de meets o/a/os/as, they contract: de + o = do, de + a = da, de + os = dos, de + as = das. When de meets aquele/aquela, they contract too: de + aquele = daquele, de + aquela = daquela. So "em baixo de aqueles livros" → "em baixo daqueles livros". These contractions are mandatory — you can't skip them!

📖 Cadê? — The Brazilian way to say "Where is…?"

A opens with "Cadê as chaves?". This little word is pure Brazilian Portuguese — you won't hear it in Portugal — and it's one of the most practical words you'll ever learn.

Cadê você?	Where are you?	Heard constantly on the phone or calling out to someone

The formal equivalent is Onde está…? (Where is…?), but cadê is far more common in everyday spoken Brazilian Portuguese.

🔊 "Não tô vendo ela" — informal speech A says "não tô vendo ela" — a very common informal contraction: estou → tô. The full formal version would be "não estou vendo-a" or "não a estou vendo." In informal Brazilian Portuguese, pronouns like ela, ele, eles are commonly used as direct objects (instead of the formal -a/-o/-as/-os clitic pronouns). So you'll constantly hear: vi ela (I saw her), chamei ele (I called him), não tô vendo ela (I can't see it/her) — completely natural in speech.

📖 Deixar — to leave (something somewhere)

B says "Você deixou em cima da mesa." — deixar here means to leave or put something in a place (often accidentally). It's different from sair (to leave a place).

Deixar is a regular -ar verb in all tenses, so the patterns are consistent. Common uses: Deixei o celular em casa. (I left my phone at home.) · Não deixa isso aí. (Don't leave that there.)

em cima da mesa

✅ Correct! Em cima de = on top of / on. Em cima da mesa = on (top of) the table. You can also hear just "na mesa" in casual speech.

lá em baixo daqueles livros

✅ Correct! Lá = over there (adds distance). Em baixo de = underneath/under. Daqueles = de + aqueles (those). Together: under those books over there.

Cadê o celular?

✅ Correct! Cadê? is the everyday Brazilian word for "Where is…?" — much more common in speech than Onde está?

Você deixou a chave atrás da porta.

✅ Correct! Deixou = pretérito of deixar (to leave something somewhere). Atrás da = behind the. So: you left the key behind the door.
