Grammar 1 — ESTAR + adjetivo: describing the weather

Use estar (not ser) for weather states — they are temporary and changeable:

Está úmido.It's humid.

For exclamations, use Que + noun: Que calor! (What heat! / It's so hot!), Que frio! (It's freezing!)

Grammar 2 — VAI + infinitivo: near future (prediction)

To talk about what is going to happen, use vai (or other forms of ir) + infinitive:

Fazer o quê? is a fixed expression meaning "what can you do?" / "nothing to be done about it" — used to accept something unavoidable with resignation.

🔊 Phonology — Exclamações: Ai! / Que + noun

Ai! is a universal Brazilian exclamation of pain, surprise, or exasperation — it functions like "Oh!", "Ow!", or "Ugh!" depending on context. The intonation rises and falls quickly.

Note the vowels in key words:

  • calor — stress on the last syllable: ca-LOR
  • insuportável — stress on -tá-: in-su-por-TÁ-vel
  • chover — the ch sounds like English "sh": sho-ver
🇧🇷 Culture — O tempo no Brasil

Brazil has diverse climates, but heat and rain dominate in many regions. In cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, complaining about the heat (reclamar do calor) is a national pastime. The rainy season (estação chuvosa) runs roughly from November to March in southeastern Brazil, bringing relief from heat but also flooding. Fazer o quê? — the resigned acceptance of weather and other uncontrollable things — reflects a broader Brazilian attitude of flexibility in the face of unpredictability.
