B: Está bom.

A: Será que aquela azul não fica melhor?

B: Não, essa vermelha está boa.

English:
A: What do you think of the color of this blouse?
B: It's fine / It looks good.
A: I wonder if that blue one wouldn't look better?
B: No, this red one looks good.
📖 Grammar & Vocabulary
Grammar 1 — Demonstratives: essa vs. aquela

Portuguese uses different demonstratives to show distance. Here are the most common feminine forms:

FormDistanceExample
essa / essenear the speaker or listenerEssa blusa está boa.
aquela / aquelefar from both speakersAquela azul fica melhor?

⚠️ In everyday Brazilian Portuguese, essa/esse is often used for both near and medium distance. Aquela/aquele signals something clearly further away.

Grammar 2 — Color adjectives: gender agreement

Most color adjectives in Portuguese agree with the noun in gender (masculine / feminine) and number:

ColorMasc. sg.Fem. sg.Masc. pl.Fem. pl.
redvermelhovermelhavermelhosvermelhas
whitebrancobrancabrancosbrancas
blackpretopretapretospretas
greenverdeverdeverdesverdes
blueazulazulazuisazuis

⚠️ Azul and verde do not change for gender — only for number (azuis, verdes). Colors borrowed from nouns (rosa, laranja, bege) are usually invariable.

Grammar 3 — FICAR + adjective: how something looks / fits

Use ficar + adjective to say how something looks or fits on someone — similar to "to look" or "to suit" in English:

PortugueseEnglish
Aquela azul fica melhor?Would that blue one look better?
Essa cor fica bem em você.This color looks good on you.
O vestido ficou ótimo! The dress looked amazing!

Compare: Está bom = it's fine/OK (general state) · Fica bem = it looks good / suits you (appearance/fit)

Grammar 4 — Será que…? (I wonder if…?)

Será que…? is a very common Brazilian expression used to express doubt, make a gentle suggestion, or think aloud:

PortugueseEnglish
Será que aquela azul não fica melhor?I wonder if that blue one wouldn't look better?
Será que ela vem hoje?I wonder if she's coming today?
Será que é caro?Do you think it's expensive?
🔊 Pronunciation — the lh sound

The digraph lh in vermelha and melhor represents a palatal lateral sound — like the "lli" in "million" or "gli" in Italian. It is not two separate sounds (not "l" + "h").

Practice: vermelha · melhor · filha · folha · olho · trabalho
🇧🇷 Culture note — Fashion talk in Brazil

Brazilians tend to give direct and enthusiastic opinions about fashion and appearance among friends. Saying "Não, essa vermelha está boa" is considered helpful and caring, not rude. Complimenting someone's clothing choice with "Ficou lindo(a)!" (It looks amazing!) is very common.
