Step 1 — Listen

🎧 Listen to the podcast episode
First listen: Who is calling? Who are they looking for? Is that person available? When will they be back?
Língua da Gente · Episode 31

Step 2 — Read the Dialogue

💬 The Conversation
Listen again while reading. This is a phone call — notice the formal register (Sr.), and pay close attention to the verb foi and the question structure Quando é que…?
A
Bom dia, o Sr. Marcos Oliveira está aí?
Good morning, is Mr. Marcos Oliveira there?
B
Desculpa, hoje ele foi para São Paulo.
I'm sorry, today he went to São Paulo.
A
Sério? Quando é que ele volta?
Really? When is he going to return?
B
Só amanhã de noite.
Only tomorrow night.

Step 3 — Language Focus

📖 Pretérito perfeito de IR — He went / I went

B explains the situation with "ele foi para São Paulo" — he went to São Paulo. Ir (to go) is irregular in the preterite, but its forms are extremely common and worth learning by heart.

Subject IR — Preterite Example
Eu fui Eu fui ao mercado. I went to the market.
Você / Ele / Ela foi Ele foi para São Paulo. He went to São Paulo.
A gente foi A gente foi à praia. We went to the beach.
Vocês / Eles / Elas foram Eles foram para o Rio. They went to Rio.
⚠️ IR and SER share the same preterite forms! Foi can mean "he/she went" (from IR) or "he/she was" (from SER — to be). Context always makes it clear: "Ele foi para São Paulo" = He went to São Paulo (IR). "Foi um problema sério" = It was a serious problem (SER). This is one of the fascinating quirks of Portuguese!
📖 Quando é que…? + Advérbios de tempo

A asks "Quando é que ele volta?" — a very natural Brazilian question structure. Adding é que after a question word is a hallmark of spoken Brazilian Portuguese. It sounds more fluent than the simpler form.

Simple form With "é que" (more natural) Meaning
Quando ele volta? Quando é que ele volta? When is he coming back?
Onde ele está? Onde é que ele está? Where is he?
O que aconteceu? O que é que aconteceu? What happened?

Time expressions in the dialogue:

PortugueseEnglishNotes
hoje today Always refers to the current day.
amanhã tomorrow The next day.
ontem yesterday Not in the dialogue, but essential to learn together!
de noite / à noite at night / in the evening Both forms are used; de noite is more common in informal speech.
de manhã in the morning Pair with de tarde (in the afternoon) and de noite.
only / just Só amanhã de noite = Only tomorrow night — emphasises the limit.
📖 Key Expressions — Phone Calls in Portuguese
Portuguese English Notes
O Sr. / A Sra. [nome] está aí? Is Mr. / Ms. [name] there? Classic phone opener. Está aí? = Is [he/she] there? Sr. = Senhor (Mr.), Sra. = Senhora (Ms./Mrs.).
Sério? Really? / Seriously? Expresses surprise or mild disbelief. Very common in conversation — you'll hear it constantly!
Quando é que ele volta? When is he coming back? Voltar = to return / come back. Present tense here expresses near future — very natural in Brazilian Portuguese.
Só amanhã de noite. Only tomorrow night. Short answer — the full sentence would be Ele volta só amanhã de noite, but Brazilians often drop the subject and verb in replies.
📞 Culture Note — Phone etiquette in Brazil Brazilian phone calls often begin with a greeting + direct question: "Bom dia, o Sr. Oliveira está aí?" or "Oi, a Fernanda tá aí?" — very direct by some cultural standards, but completely normal in Brazil. When someone is not available, it's polite to say Desculpa before delivering the news. You might also hear "Posso deixar um recado?" (May I leave a message?) or "Pode pedir para ele me ligar?" (Can you ask him to call me back?).
🔊 Pronunciation — "Quando é que" In natural speech, quando é que often blurs together into something like "quanduki" — the boundaries between words disappear. Don't be surprised if you can't hear the three separate words at normal speed. Focus on the overall question melody: rising pitch on quando, then falling at the end.
