Step 1 — Listen

🎧 Listen to the podcast episode
First listen: What musical genre does speaker B prefer? What artist does speaker A mention? Do they share the same taste?

Step 2 — Read the Dialogue

💬 The Conversation
Listen again while reading. Notice how both speakers express strong enthusiasm — and how they agree with each other at the end.
A
Que tipo de música tu gosta?
What type of music do you like?
B
Para mim, é a MPB, adoro ouvir essas músicas.
For me, it is MPB, I love to hear that type of music.
A
Concordo, adoro essas clássicas do Gilberto Gil.
I agree, I love the classics of Gilberto Gil.
B
Sei, também gosto.
I know, I like them too.

Step 3 — Language Focus

📖 Adorar + infinitivo — Loving something

B says "adoro ouvir essas músicas" — I love listening to that music. Adorar expresses a stronger feeling than gostar de. It's very common in everyday Brazilian speech and works just like gostar + infinitive, without needing de between the verbs.

Subject Adorar Example
Eu adoro Eu adoro ouvir MPB. I love listening to MPB.
Você / Ele / Ela adora Ela adora cantar. She loves to sing.
A gente adora A gente adora essas clássicas. We love these classics.
Vocês / Eles / Elas adoram Eles adoram música brasileira. They love Brazilian music.

📖 Que tipo de…? + Concordar + Também

This dialogue is full of conversational tools — asking what kind of something someone likes, expressing a personal opinion, and agreeing. These phrases come up constantly in Brazilian conversation.

Structure Example Meaning
Que tipo de + noun + verb? Que tipo de música tu gosta? What type of music do you like?
Para mim, é… Para mim, é a MPB. For me, it's MPB. — frames this as a personal opinion, not a universal fact.
Concordo. Concordo, adoro essas clássicas. I agree. — direct, simple, very useful.
Sei. Sei, também gosto. I know. — used as a soft "yeah" or acknowledgement, not literally "I know that fact".
Também Eu também gosto. / Também gosto. I like them too. — também = also / too. Can go before or after the verb.

Que tipo de comida você gosta? What type of food do you like?
Que tipo de filme você assiste? What type of film do you watch?
Que tipo de livro você lê?What type of book do you read?
🔊 "Tu gosta" — again! Just like in Episode 30, speaker A uses tu with the você verb form: "tu gosta" instead of "tu gostas". This is completely natural in spoken Brazilian Portuguese across many regions. If you're using você, say "você gosta" — both are correct and both will be understood everywhere in Brazil.
🎵 Culture — MPB: A música que define o Brasil
🇧🇷 O que é MPB? MPB — Música Popular Brasileira — is far more than a musical genre. Born in the 1960s, it blends the rhythmic roots of samba and bossa nova with poetic lyrics, jazz harmonies, and later rock influences. It became the soundtrack of Brazilian identity, artistic resistance, and everyday emotion. If you want to understand Brazilian culture, MPB is a key to unlock it.
🎸 Gilberto Gil — artist, activist, minister Gilberto Gil (born 1942, Bahia) is one of Brazil's most beloved and influential musicians. Co-founder of the Tropicália movement in the late 1960s — which fused Brazilian music with electric rock and avant-garde art — he has spent six decades creating music that is simultaneously deeply Brazilian and globally minded. His catalogue spans samba, reggae, forró, electronic music, and more. Gil was exiled from Brazil under the military dictatorship (1969–72), living in London before returning. From 2003 to 2008, he served as Brazil's Minister of Culture. Essential songs to discover: Aquele Abraço, Toda Menina Baiana, Esperando na Janela, Palco.
