Step 2 — Read the Dialogue
💬 The Conversation
Read along while listening. Notice estar com + noun for physical states and the intensifier pra caramba.
A
Eduardo, vamos dormir, tô cansada pra caramba.
Eduardo, let's go to bed, I'm really tired.
B
Mas ainda é cedo.
But it's early still.
A
Eu sei, mas estou com sono.
I know, but I'm really sleepy.
B
Tá bom, já tô indo.
OK, I'm coming.
Step 3 — Language Focus
📖 Estar com + noun — Physical states
A says "estou com sono" — Portuguese uses estar com + noun (not an adjective!) for many physical states, unlike English "to be sleepy/hungry/thirsty."
Expression
English
estar com sono
to be sleepy
estar com fome
to be hungry
estar com sede
to be thirsty
estar com calor/frio
to be hot/cold
📖 Pra caramba — A very common intensifier
A says she's tired "pra caramba" — a casual, mild-swear-adjacent intensifier meaning "a lot / really," used constantly in informal Brazilian speech.
Phrase
Meaning
Example
pra caramba
a whole lot / really
Tô cansada pra caramba.
já tô indo
I'm coming / on my way
Resposta comum quando alguém chama.
💤 Tô = Estou
In very casual speech, estou is almost always shortened to tô — you'll hear this constantly in real conversations, though it's not used in formal writing.
