Read the dialogue

A person complains to a friend about their uncomfortable bed, and they troubleshoot possible fixes.

A: Ai, sabe, eu nunca gostei dessa cama, as vezes parece dura demais, e as vezes parece mole demais.

Ay, you know, I never liked this bed, sometimes it seems too hard, and sometimes it seems too soft.

B: Por quê você não compra outra?

Why don't you buy another one?

A: Ah, essa saiu tão cara, e quem sabe se eu comprar uma nova vai ser igual.

Oh, this one was so expensive, and who knows if I buy a new one that it won't be the same.

B: Eu sei, fazer o que, né?

I know, what can you do, you know?

A: É, as vezes eu acordo com dor nas costas, e outras vezes com dor no pescoço.

Yeah, sometimes I wake up with a sore back, other times with a sore neck.

B: Será que não é o caso de trocar de travesseiro.

Maybe it's a matter of changing your pillow.

A: Já troquei, mas sabe, é a cama mesmo.

I already did change, you know, it really is the bed.

Focus 1

Demais — Too (excessive) + adjective

English: too (much) — the suffix indicating excess

Demais after an adjective means "too much" — dura demais (too hard), mole demais (too soft). A simple but essential intensifier.

Parece dura demais, e as vezes mole demais.
It seems too hard, and sometimes too soft.Está quente demais.
It's too hot.

Focus 2

Quem sabe se — Who knows if

English: who knows if / maybe (expressing uncertainty)

Quem sabe se + sentence expresses uncertainty about a hypothetical outcome — useful for weighing decisions with unclear results.

Quem sabe se eu comprar uma nova vai ser igual.
Who knows if a new one would be the same.Quem sabe se ele vem.
Who knows if he's coming.

Focus 3

Fazer o que, né? — What can you do? (resignation)

English: what can you do, right? (resigned acceptance)

Fazer o que, né? is a classic, resigned way to accept an unfortunate but unavoidable situation — very natural and commiserating.

Eu sei, fazer o que, né?
I know, what can you do, right?

🛏️ Reclamações universais Complaining about mattresses and sleep quality is a truly universal experience — this dialogue's mix of resignation and troubleshooting (pillow? mattress?) will feel very familiar to anyone.

🔊 Será que Será que (I wonder if / could it be that) softens a suggestion into a gentle question, making troubleshooting suggestions feel less pushy.
