Read the dialogue

A friend asks an elementary school teacher about what she's currently teaching her class.

A: Você é professora do primário, não é?

You are an elementary school teacher, right?

B: Sou sim, adoro meu trabalho.

Yes, I am, I love my job.

A: E o que você está ensinando agora?

And what are you teaching now?

B: Bom, essa semana estamos aprendendo as formas básicas: quadrado, retângulo, círculo, triângulo, etc.

Well, this week we are learning the basic shapes: square, rectangle, circle, triangle, etc.

A: E as crianças gostam?

Do the children like it?

B: Gostam, mas para alguns é difícil entender a diferença entre paralelogramo e trapézios.

They do, but for some it is difficult to understand the difference between parallelogram and trapezoid.

A: Eu também nunca entendia bem essas diferenças.

I never understood those differences very well either.

B: Bom, se precisar, pode voltar para a escola primária também, meu amigo!

Well, if you need to, you can come back to elementary school too, my friend!

Focus 1

Estar + gerúndio — o presente contínuo

English: what's happening right now / these days

To talk about something happening right now, or during a limited current period (like "this week"), Brazilian Portuguese uses estar (conjugated) + gerúndio (-ando/-endo/-indo): "o que você está ensinando?", "estamos aprendendo as formas básicas." This is different from the simple present, which describes habits and general facts.

What are you teaching now? Essa semana estamos aprendendo as formas básicas.

Focus 2

Imperfeito para estados mentais no passado

English: I never really used to understand... (an ongoing past state, not one event)

"Eu também nunca entendia bem essas diferenças" uses the imperfeito, not the perfeito, because it describes an ongoing or repeated mental state throughout a period of the past — "I never used to understand" (all through school), not one single moment of failing to understand. Compare: entendi (I understood — one completed moment) vs. entendia (I used to understand / didn't use to understand — an ongoing state).

Eu também nunca entendia bem essas diferenças.
I never really understood those differences either. Quando eu era criança, eu não gostava de matemática.
When I was a kid, I didn't like math. (ongoing feeling, not one event)

Geometric shapes & everyday expressions

Basic shape vocabulary from a Brazilian elementary school classroom, plus two very common conversational patterns.

Quadrado — square
Retângulo — rectangle

Meu amigo / minha amiga — "my friend" used affectionately, often teasing, at the end of a sentence

🏫 Culture note Primário (or, more formally today, ensino fundamental I) refers to the first years of school in Brazil, roughly ages 6–10. Teachers here are often called professora even by adults who are no longer their students — a warm, respectful holdover.

🔊 Phonology note In fast, informal speech, está often reduces to just "tá": "o que você tá ensinando?" is extremely common and sounds completely natural — you'll hear it constantly in casual conversation.

Exercise 1 — Comprehension check

Choose the correct answer based on the dialogue.

1. O que a professora está ensinando essa semana?

Números e cores. As formas básicas: quadrado, retângulo, círculo, triângulo. O alfabeto.

2. Qual é a maior dificuldade das crianças?

Aprender a somar. Entender a diferença entre paralelogramo e trapézio. Desenhar círculos.

3. O que B sugere para A no final?

Que ele estude sozinho em casa. Que ele volte para a escola primária também. Que ele pergunte para as crianças.
