Gostar de · Adorar — expressing likes
English: to like / to love
Gostar de means "to like" and always needs de before the noun or verb. Adorar means "to love / adore" and is used without preposition. Adding mesmo after the verb intensifies it: gosta mesmo = really likes.
Both follow the regular conjugation pattern for -ar verbs, but gostar is followed by de, not a direct object.

English: to think that / that's why
Achar que = "to think that" — used to express opinions softly. It's much more common in everyday speech than pensar que.
Por isso que = "that's why / that's the reason why" — links a cause to its consequence. Equivalent to por essa razão, but far more colloquial and natural.

Feijoada is considered Brazil's national dish. Traditionally served on Saturdays, it is a slow-cooked black bean stew with sausage, pork ribs, and other cuts, served with rice, couve (collard greens), farofa, and orange slices. The orange is not just decoration — the acidity helps digest the fat. It's a social meal: unhurried, abundant, and shared.
🔊 Phonology note
Notice principalmente — 6 syllables: prin-ci-pal-men-te. Stress falls on the antepenultimate syllable. Similarly: laranja (la-ran-ja), farofa (fa-ro-fa). In BP, unstressed e at the end of a word is often reduced to a near-silent "i" sound: principalmente → /prinsipal'mẽtʃi/.
