Read the dialogue

A husband asks his wife if she likes the soup, and she admits she preferred the old recipe.

A: A sopa está boa bem?

How is the soup dear?

B: Está..., é, está mais ou menos... você fez alguma coisa diferente?

It's, it's OK…, did you do something different?

A: Eu experimentei alguns ingredientes diferentes. Por quê? Ela não está boa?

I experimented with some new ingredients, why, isn't it good?

B: Bom, pra falar a verdade, gosto mais de como era antes.

Well, to tell you the truth, I like more how it was before.

A: Sabe, eu confesso que eu também gostei mais da outra receita.

You know, I confess that I liked the other recipe more too.

B: Não tem problema, me passa o sal por favor.

No problem, pass me the salt please.

Mais ou menos — So-so / kind of

English: so-so, sort of, more or less

Mais ou menos is the standard, diplomatic way to say something is just OK — not great, not terrible.

Está mais ou menos.
It's so-so.Entendi mais ou menos.
I sort of understood.

Focus 2

Pra falar a verdade — To tell the truth

English: to tell the truth / honestly

Pra falar a verdade introduces an honest, sometimes slightly awkward admission — softening the delivery of criticism or a confession.

Pra falar a verdade, gosto mais de como era antes.
To tell the truth, I liked it better before.Pra falar a verdade, não gostei do filme.
To be honest, I didn't like the movie.

Gostar mais de — Comparing past and present preferences

English: to like more / prefer (comparing versions)

Gostar mais de + noun compares preferences, especially useful when comparing an old version to a new one.

Gosto mais de como era antes.
I like how it was before more.Eu também gostei mais da outra receita.
I also liked the other recipe more.

🔊 Ela não está boa? Note that sopa is feminine, so it's referred to as ela — a good reminder that Portuguese pronouns must always match the gender of their noun.
