Read the dialogue

A man asks a female friend about waxing and plucking eyebrows, amazed at how much pain it involves.

A: Mulheres, vocês pagam mesmo alguém para depilar as sobrancelhas?

Women, do you really pay someone to pluck your eyebrows?

B: Não eu mesma uso pinça, pago outros para fazer depilação de cera.

No, I pluck them myself, I pay someone to get them waxed.

A: De cera, hein? Em mim, acho que doeria muito.

Waxed, huh? Sounds like that would be painful.

B: Sei, as vezes traz lágrimas aos olhos.

I know, sometimes it brings tears to my eyes.

A: Ainda bem que não sou mulher.

Glad I'm not a woman.

B: Concordo, você choraria como bebê.

Agreed, you'd cry like a baby.

Language focus
Focus 1
Pagar para + infinitivo — To pay someone to do
English: to pay (someone) to do something
Pagar + para + infinitive describes paying for a service. Note it's pagar para fazer — not pagar fazer.
Pago outros para fazer depilação de cera.
I pay others to wax it.Pago alguém para limpar a casa.
I pay someone to clean the house.
Focus 2
Ainda bem que — Thank goodness that
English: thank goodness / it's a good thing that
Ainda bem que + sentence expresses relief about something — a very common, useful everyday phrase.
Ainda bem que não sou mulher.
Thank goodness I'm not a woman.Ainda bem que você chegou!
Thank goodness you arrived!
Focus 3
O condicional — Doeria, choraria (hipóteses)
English: the conditional mood, for imagining a hypothetical reaction
Doeria and choraria (conditional of doer and chorar) describe what would happen in an imagined situation — "it would hurt," "you would cry."
Acho que doeria muito.
I think it would hurt a lot.Você choraria como bebê.
You would cry like a baby.
💅 Depilação no Brasil Waxing (depilação de cera) is extremely common in Brazil for both men and women — salons offering it are found on nearly every corner, much more mainstream than in many other countries.
🔊 Choraria vs. Chorava Don't confuse the conditional choraria (would cry) with the imperfeito chorava (used to cry / was crying) — similar sound, different meaning and tense.
