Read the dialogue

A dog and cat lover tries — and fails — to win over a friend who can't stand pets.

A: Você gosta mais de gato ou de cachorro?

Do you like cats or dogs more?

B: Nenhum dos dois, sou alérgica aos animais domésticos.

Neither of the two, I'm allergic to pets.

A: Mas os gatos são tão lindos, e os cachorros tem tanta personalidade!

But cats are so beautiful, and dogs have so much personality!

B: E eles soltam pelos em todo lugar, é terrível.

And they shed fur everywhere, it's terrible.

A: Então nem se eu te desse um cachorrinho de presente?

So not even if I gave you a little puppy for a present?

B: Não, por favor, nem assim aceitaria, detesto esses bichos.

Please don't, I wouldn't accept it, I hate these pets.

Focus 1

Se + imperfeito do subjuntivo, + condicional

English: If I gave..., would you...? (hypothetical if/then)

This is the classic Portuguese hypothetical: se + imperfeito do subjuntivo (desse, from dar) sets up an unlikely condition, and the condicional (aceitaria, from aceitar) gives the result: "se eu te desse um cachorrinho, você aceitaria?" = "if I gave you a puppy, would you accept it?"

Focus 2

Tão vs. tanto(a) — intensificadores

English: so (+ adjective) vs. so much/many (+ noun)

Tão is invariable and goes before an adjective: "tão lindos" = "so beautiful." Tanto agrees in gender and number with the noun that follows: tanta personalidade, tantos problemas, tantas ideias.

Os gatos são tão lindos!
Cats are so beautiful! Os cachorros têm tanta personalidade!
Dogs have so much personality!

Nenhum dos dois & vocabulário de animais

English: neither of the two + pet vocabulary

Nenhum dos dois (or nenhuma das duas for feminine) rejects both options in a choice between two things.

Pelos — fur/hair (shed) · Bicho — critter, animal (informal)

🐾 Culture note Bicho is a very common, slightly informal word for "animal" or "critter" in Brazilian Portuguese — used affectionately for pets or dismissively, as B does here ("detesto esses bichos").

🔊 Phonology note In cachorrinho, the diminutive suffix -inho adds a soft, affectionate tone — very common with pets and things people find cute, regardless of actual size.
