A customer walks into a flower shop looking for the perfect gift for his wife.

A: Boa tarde. Em que eu posso ajudar senhor?

Good afternoon. How may I help you?

B: Boa tarde, queria comprar umas flores para minha esposa.

Good afternoon, I wanted to buy some flowers for my wife.

A: Está bem. Que tipo de flores?

Fine. What type of flowers?

B: Quem sabe um buquê de rosas.

Perhaps a bouquet of roses.

A: Que cor o senhor prefere?

What color do you prefer?

B: Essas vermelhas talvez. Que mais você tem?

Maybe these red ones. What else do you have?

Focus 1

Queria — um pedido mais educado

English: I would like... (a softer, more polite way to ask)

Using the imperfeito of querer — queria instead of quero — softens a request, much like English "I would like" sounds more polite than the blunter "I want." You'll hear "queria" constantly in shops, restaurants, and any service situation.

Queria comprar umas flores para minha esposa.
I wanted to buy some flowers for my wife. Queria uma mesa para dois, por favor.
I'd like a table for two, please.

Focus 2

Concordância de gênero — cores e "flores"

English: matching color adjectives to feminine plural nouns

Flores is feminine plural, so color adjectives agree: vermelhas, brancas, amarelas. But cor-de-rosa ("pink," literally "color of rose") is a fixed compound expression and never changes form, no matter the gender or number of what it describes.

Vocabulário de floricultura & "Me dá + quantidade"

Flower-shop vocabulary & making a purchase request

Me dá + quantidade ("give me + amount") is a natural, friendly way to close a purchase in a casual shop setting.

Buquê — bouquet
Rosa — rose
Dúzia — dozen
Flor / flores — flower / flowers

Me dá uma dúzia delas. — Give me a dozen of them.
O senhor / a senhora — formal "you," used respectfully with customers or strangers

🌹 Culture note O senhor / a senhora is the polite, formal way service staff address customers in Brazil — especially older customers or in more traditional shops. It shows respect without needing a title.

🔊 Phonology note Buquê is a French loanword (bouquet), and Brazilian Portuguese keeps the stress on the final syllable — bu-QUÊ — unlike most native Portuguese words, which usually stress the second-to-last syllable.
