Two friends stuck in traffic in Florianópolis reminisce about how good traffic used to be.

A: Lembra quando o trânsito aqui em Florianópolis era tranquilo?

Remember when traffic here in Florianopolis was good?

B: Hoje em dia tá pior do que São Paulo.

Nowadays it's worse than São Paulo.

A: Exagera não Eduardo, nada é pior do que São Paulo.

Don't exaggerate Eduardo, nothing is worse than São Paulo.

B: Mesmo assim, olha lá, tá tudo engarrafado.

Still, look how it's all clogged up!

A: Sei, vamos sair nessa pra pegar a Benvenuta.

Nada é pior do que — Nothing is worse than (negative superlative)

English: nothing is worse than (strongest negative comparison)

Nada é pior do que mirrors the nada é melhor do que pattern from Ep40/63 — same structure, opposite meaning, for the strongest possible negative comparison.

Nada é pior do que São Paulo.

Hoje em dia — Nowadays

English: nowadays, these days (contrasting with the past)

Hoje em dia introduces a contrast with how things used to be — pairs naturally with the imperfeito for reminiscing.

🔊 Engarrafado Engarrafado (clogged with traffic) literally relates to garrafa (bottle) — imagine traffic "bottled up" like liquid stuck in a bottleneck.
