Read the dialogue

Two friends leave the movie theater and disagree about whether the cinema is really worth it.

A: Você gostou do filme?

Did you like the movie?

B: Foi bom, mas sabe, acho que até prefiro assistir em casa, viu?

It was good, but you know, I think that I actually prefer to watch them at home, you know?

A: Sei, é mais barato, e a gente pode sentar onde e como quiser.

I know, it's cheaper, and you can sit where and how you want to.

B: Exato, e é chato ter que sofrer quase 30 minutos com esses trailers.

Exactly, and it is so boring to suffer through 30 minutes of these previews.

A: Mas você não acha legal ver os efeitos de 3D numa tela gigante?

But don't you think it's cool to see the 3D effects on a big screen?

B: Não, pra mim, eu prefiro o conforto e flexibilidade da minha casa.

No, for me, I prefer the comfort and flexibility of my home.

Focus 1

Você gostou...? — pretérito perfeito de gostar

English: Did you like...? (asking about a past opinion)

Gostou is the pretérito perfeito (simple past) of gostar de, used to ask or say whether someone liked something that already happened: "Você gostou do filme?" = "Did you like the movie?"

Você gostou do filme?
Did you like the movie? Foi bom, mas eu prefiro assistir em casa.
It was good, but I prefer to watch at home.

Prefiro... — expressando preferência

English: I prefer... (+ infinitive or noun)

Prefiro can be followed by an infinitive verb (prefiro assistir) or directly by a noun (prefiro o conforto) to say what you like better.

Eu prefiro assistir em casa, viu?
I prefer to watch at home, you know? Eu prefiro o conforto e flexibilidade da minha casa.
I prefer the comfort and flexibility of my home.

Focus 3

Você não acha...? & vocabulário do cinema

English: Don't you think...? + cinema vocabulary

Você não acha (legal)...? is a friendly way to invite someone's opinion, often when you expect them to agree — literally "don't you think...?"

🍿 Culture note Going to the movies in Brazil ("ir ao cinema") is still a popular outing, but streaming has made this exact debate — cinema vs. home comfort — very common among Brazilian friends, especially given ticket prices and long pre-show trailers.

🔊 Phonology note Notice the reduction in casual speech: "pra mim" (for "para mim") and "a gente" (for "nós") — both extremely common in everyday spoken Brazilian Portuguese.
