Read the dialogue

A friend checks in on João's progress quitting smoking.

A: Ô João, então você já largou do cigarro?

Hey João, so have you already quit smoking?

B: Ainda não, que bom saber que você nunca entrou nessa.

Not yet, it's a good thing you never got into that.

A: Quer dizer que ainda está tentando?

So that means that you are still trying?

B: Tentando, falhando, mas não desisto não, eu vou conseguir.

Trying, failing, but I'm not giving up, I'm going to win out.

A: Eu admiro o esforço, viu? Deve ser muito difícil mesmo.

I admire your effort, you know? It must really be very difficult.

B: Ah, se você soubesse..., é terrível, mas eu vou conseguir.

Ah, if you knew..., it is terrible, but I'm going to beat it.

Focus 1

Já + pretérito perfeito...? / Ainda não

English: Have you already...? / Not yet

Já + pretérito perfeito asks whether something has already happened: "você já largou do cigarro?" = "have you already quit smoking?" The natural negative answer is ainda não — "not yet."

Você já largou do cigarro?
Have you already quit smoking? — Ainda não, que bom saber que você nunca entrou nessa.
Not yet, it's a good thing you never got into that.

Focus 2

Não... não — negação dupla enfática

English: definitely not, no way (emphatic double negative)

In spoken Brazilian Portuguese, repeating não at the end of a negative sentence adds emphasis: "não desisto não" = "I am definitely not giving up." The second não doesn't cancel the first — it reinforces it.

Tentando, falhando, mas não desisto não.
Trying, failing, but I'm definitely not giving up. Eu não vou não, pode esquecer.
I am definitely not going, forget it.

Focus 3

Se você soubesse...! & vocabulário do hábito

English: If only you knew...! + habit/addiction vocabulary

Se você soubesse...! uses the imperfeito do subjuntivo (soubesse, from saber) in a deliberately unfinished exclamation — implying "you have no idea how hard this is." It's a very natural, emotional chunk to recognize and reuse as-is.

Ah, se você soubesse..., é terrível!
Ah, if only you knew..., it's terrible! Cigarro — cigarette · Largar (do vício) — to quit (a habit)
Desistir — to give up · Esforço — effort · Vício — addiction/habit

💭 Culture note "Se você soubesse...!" is a common way Brazilians express that a struggle is more intense than it appears from the outside — often left intentionally unfinished, since the emotion speaks louder than any explanation would.

🔊 Phonology note In não desisto não, the two "não"s are pronounced with slightly different emphasis — the second one is often shorter and more clipped, functioning almost like a stress marker rather than a full word.
