Marcos is back from a freezing trip to New York, and his friend can't resist saying "I told you so."

A: Oi Marcos, você gostou de Nova Iorque?

Hi Marcos, did you like New York?

I did, but I've never been so cold in my life.

A: Cara, eu te avisei, lembra? Faz um frio danado em Nova Iorque.

I told you man, remember? It gets really cold in New York.

I know, and I got there with a coat, gloves, a hat, everything, but despite that, when I got out of the taxi the cold almost killed me.

And it's a cold that penetrates, it hurts you, isn't that right?

Yeah, I really don't know how people live in a place like that. I simply wouldn't be able to take it.

And, man, I remember one time when I left my hotel, the air that came out of my mouth froze.

B: Não! É impossível! E o efeito do vento, foi horrível.

No! That's impossible! And the effect of the wind, it was horrible.

Language focus
Focus 1
Quase + pretérito perfeito — "I almost..."
English: I almost/nearly did X (something that didn't quite happen)
Quase + pretérito perfeito describes something that came close to happening but didn't: "quase morri de frio" = "I nearly died of cold" (obviously, he survived!). This dramatic, everyday pattern works with any verb in the perfeito.
When I got out of the taxi, I nearly died of cold. Quase perdi o ônibus hoje!
I almost missed the bus today!
Focus 2
Poderia — condicional de poder
English: could / would be able to (hypothetical ability or inability)
Poderia (the condicional of poder) expresses a hypothetical ability — or, negated, a firm sense of inability: "eu simplesmente não poderia aguentar" = "I simply wouldn't be able to stand it." It's also used to make polite requests softer and less direct.
Eu simplesmente não poderia aguentar.
I simply wouldn't be able to take it. Você poderia me ajudar com isso?
Could you help me with this? (a polite request)
Focus 3
Vocabulário do frio & expressões do diálogo
Cold-weather vocabulary & everyday expressions
Key vocabulary and conversational patterns for describing an extreme weather experience.
Casaco — coat
Luvas — gloves
Gorro — winter hat / beanie
Congelar — to freeze
Doer — to hurt
Vento — wind

Nunca... na vida — never in my life (emphatic superlative)
Não é mesmo? — isn't that right? (tag question, variant of não é?/viu?)
❄️ Culture note Most of Brazil never sees freezing temperatures, so genuinely cold winters — like a New York winter — are a real shock for many Brazilians. Stories about "how cold it really got" are a classic travel-conversation topic.
🔊 Phonology note Notice the diphthong in frio (fri-o) — the "io" glides smoothly from "i" to "o" in one syllable, unlike English, which would tend to separate them. Practice saying it as one quick, connected sound.
