Read the dialogue

A friend describes a strange dream, and the two try to figure out what it means.

A: Sabe que eu sonhei com você ontem à noite.

You know that I dreamt about you last night.

B: Sério, como foi isso?

Really, what was it about?

A: Muito estranho, você tinha asas e saía voando.

Really strange, you had wings and flew away.

B: Ah é, isso simboliza minha coragem e meu poder.

Oh yes, this symbolizes my courage and power.

A: Não sei, você fugiu quando te apresentei a um rapaz bem lindo.

I don't know, you were running away when I introduced you to a handsome guy.

B: Ah, vai ver então que simboliza minha timidez e minha falta de confiança.

Oh, well you see that it symbolizes my shyness and my lack of confidence.

Focus 1

Sonhar com — "to dream about"

English: to dream about/of (fixed preposition)

Sonhar is always followed by com, not "sobre" as English speakers might expect: "sonhei com você" = "I dreamt about you." Keep this fixed pairing in mind whenever you talk about dreams.

Eu sonhei com você ontem à noite.
I dreamt about you last night. Ela sempre sonha com viagens.
She always dreams about trips.

Focus 2

Verbo de movimento + gerúndio

English: was flying/walking/running off (ongoing manner of movement)

A movement verb in the imperfeito, followed by a gerúndio, paints an ongoing scene in a story: "saía voando" = "was flying off/away." This combination vividly shows manner and direction of movement happening in the background of a narrative.

Você tinha asas e saía voando.
You had wings and were flying away. Ele ia andando devagar pela rua.
He was walking slowly down the street.

Vai ver que... & vocabulário de sonhos

English: it must be that... / I bet that... (speculating)

Vai ver que introduces a guess or interpretation — a casual way to speculate about why something happened or what it means.

Vai ver que simboliza minha timidez.

💭 Culture note Sharing and interpreting dreams — often looking for symbolic meaning about emotions or personality — is a common, casual topic of conversation between close friends in Brazil, much like this playful back-and-forth.

🔊 Phonology note In voando, the "ão" is a nasal diphthong — say it through the nose, letting the sound trail off, rather than pronouncing a hard "ow" as in English.
