Read the dialogue

A friend is curious about Orlando's exact height and weight — which means switching from feet and pounds to meters and kilos.

A: Você é bem alto Orlando. Qual é sua altura?

You are really tall Orlando. How tall are you?

B: Seis pés e 4 polegadas.

Six feet and four inches.

A: E quanto é isso em metros? Você deve ter uns dois metros, não é?

And how much is that in meters? You are probably about two meters tall, right?

B: Nem tanto. Se não me engano, é 1 metro e 93 ou 94 centímetros, por aí.

Not quite. If I'm not mistaken, that is 1.93 or 1.94 meters, around there.

A: Mesmo assim, você é bem alto. E quanto você pesa?

Still, you are really tall. And how much do you weigh?

B: Entre 200 e 205 libras.

Between 200 and 205 pounds.

A: Eu não entendo nada de libras. Quanto é isso em quilos?

I don't understand anything about pounds. How much is that in kilos?

B: Quem sabe mais ou menos uns 90 a 93 quilos.

Language focus

Focus 1

Bem + adjetivo — a common intensifier

English: really / quite (+ adjective)

Placed right before an adjective, bem works as an intensifier meaning "really/quite" — a more conversational alternative to muito. "Você é bem alto" = "You are really tall." Don't confuse this with the adverb bem meaning "well," which follows a verb instead: "ele fala bem" (he speaks well). Word order is the clue.

Bem = really (intensifier)

Focus 2

Dever + infinitivo — guessing and assuming

English: must be / is probably (a supposition, not an obligation)

Dever + infinitivo usually means "should" (obligation), but it also expresses a logical guess based on evidence — like English "must be." "Você deve ter uns dois metros" = "You must be about two meters tall" (a reasonable assumption, not a command).

Measurement vocabulary & hedging expressions

Talking about height and weight in Brazil means switching your mental units — and hedging your answer, since exact numbers rarely matter as much as the ballpark.

Altura — height

🌎 Culture note Brazil uses the metric system exclusively — metros and quilos, never feet or pounds. Conversations like this one, converting units for an American friend, are extremely common between Brazilians and English speakers, so it's worth knowing your own height and weight in metric!

🔊 Phonology note The tag question "não é?" ("right?"/"isn't it?") is everywhere in spoken Brazilian Portuguese, and in fast, informal speech it often reduces to just "né?" — you'll hear both forms constantly.

Exercise 1 — Comprehension check

Choose the correct answer based on the dialogue.

1. Quanto Orlando mede, em pés e polegadas?

Seis pés e 4 polegadas. Cinco pés e 10 polegadas. Sete pés.
