"Já" + Pretérito Perfeito — e "É + adjetivo + infinitivo"
This dialogue packs two very useful structures into four lines. First, já ("already") paired with the pretérito perfeito to ask about — and confirm — a completed action: "Você já comprou ingressos?" / "Já, o ciclismo..." Note how já alone can stand in as a full "yes, I have" answer.
Second, the impersonal é + adjetivo + infinitivo pattern for general evaluations: "é muito difícil e muito caro conseguir os ingressos." The infinitive (not a conjugated verb) always follows this structure.
| Structure | Example from the dialogue |
|---|---|
| já + pretérito perfeito (pergunta) | Você já comprou ingressos? |
| já (resposta completa, sozinha) | Já, o ciclismo de pista... |
| é + adjetivo + infinitivo | É difícil e caro conseguir os ingressos. |
Note: the opposite of já here is ainda não ("not yet") — "Ainda não comprei ingressos para o basquete."
Esportes olímpicos e o mercado de ingressos
Four Olympic sports are named in this short exchange. Notice that Portuguese sport names don't always match their English counterparts word-for-word:
| Esporte | Em inglês | Exemplo do diálogo |
|---|---|---|
| ciclismo de pista | track / road cycling | o ciclismo de pista, levantamento de pesos... |
| levantamento de pesos | weight lifting | ...levantamento de pesos e vôlei de praia |
| vôlei de praia | beach volleyball | ...e vôlei de praia |
| basquete | basketball | ingressos para o basquete |
Entonação — perguntas de sim/não vs. perguntas com "por quê"
"Você já comprou ingressos?" is a yes/no question — the pitch rises toward the end, just like in English. But "Por quê você não comprou ingressos para o basquete?" is a wh-question, and in Brazilian Portuguese these typically fall in pitch toward the end, unlike the rising intonation English speakers often default to on "why" questions.
Practice reading both questions from the dialogue aloud, exaggerating the rise on the first and the fall on the second — it's a small habit that makes spoken Portuguese sound much more natural.
