Imperfeito (hábito/descrição no passado) vs. Perfeito (evento específico)

This dialogue is a textbook contrast: when describing ongoing states or repeated habits in the past, Portuguese uses pretérito imperfeito: "...as brigas que tínhamos quando ainda éramos pequenos" (this happened repeatedly, over a period). When narrating one specific completed event, it uses pretérito perfeito: "ele ficou assustado... e decidiu dormir embaixo da cama" (this happened once, on a specific occasion).

Quick test: is it describing "how things were / used to be" over time → imperfeito. Is it "what happened, once" → perfeito.

Notice "meu irmãozinho" — the diminutive here isn't about size, it's a term of affection for a younger sibling, very common in Brazilian Portuguese when talking about family members you feel close to.
