Foco Gramatical

Superlativo (o mais + adjetivo) e "seria" para hipóteses

To say something is "the most" of a group, Portuguese uses o/a + mais + adjetivo: "o livre é o mais rápido e o mais emocionante." To make a hypothetical, emotional judgment about a situation, the dialogue uses seria (futuro do pretérito of ser): "como seria triste ser desclassificado..."

Note: seria softens a statement into a hypothesis or hedge — compare the flat "é triste" (it is sad) with the more reflective "seria triste" (it would be sad, if you think about it).

Swimming is one of Brazil's most-watched Olympic sports, and this dialogue is full of race-specific vocabulary:

💬 "queimou no bloco" — literally "burned at the block," this is the idiomatic way Brazilians describe a false start in swimming or track — the athlete jumped the gun and got disqualified.

Foco Fonológico

"Nossa!" — o espanto em uma só palavra

Nossa! (short for Nossa Senhora, "Our Lady") is one of the most common exclamations in Brazilian Portuguese — used constantly by people of all backgrounds, regardless of religion, simply to express surprise or enthusiasm, much like English "Wow!"

Like "Não! Não acredito!" (Ep 12) and "Sério!" (Ep 13), Nossa! carries a sharp rise in pitch and a stretched vowel when said with feeling: "NOOOssa!" Try saying it at the very start of a sentence, the way native speakers do, before launching into the rest of what you want to say.

Choose the best meaning or explanation for each expression from the dialogue.

1. "Nossa!" at the start of the dialogue expresses:

Write about a memorable, dramatic, or disappointing sports moment you remember watching. Write 4–6 lines in Portuguese. Include: at least one superlative (o/a mais + adjetivo), and at least one sentence with seria + adjetivo to express a hypothetical judgment.
