Pretérito Perfeito — experiências e ações concluídas

This short dialogue is built almost entirely on the pretérito perfeito, the tense for completed past actions and experiences: "Você acompanhou a rota do revezamento da tocha?" / "Acompanhei, até assisti em Santos quando os condutores passaram."

In connected speech, Brazilians link a word-final -s to the vowel that starts the next word. "Os atletas" is pronounced as one flowing unit — "o-za-tle-tas" — not "os" + "atletas" separately. The same happens in "quando os condutores" → "quan-do-zos-con-du-to-res."

This liaison (in Portuguese, sandhi) is one of the biggest reasons spoken Brazilian Portuguese sounds faster and more "joined together" than the written word suggests — train your ear for it while listening to the episode again.
