| A | Ô, vem cá, me explica uma coisa. | Hey, come here, explain something to me. What's this thing about double-oar and single-oar boats? |
| Okay, it's easy. In rowing, each athlete either uses two oars, which is double-oar, or just one oar, single-oar. |
| A | E qual você gosta mais? | And which do you like more? |
| I've always liked more the rhythm of the strokes with an eight-person crew. |
| And is that one with double-oar or single-oar? |
| That one's single-oar, 8 crewmates plus the coxswain. |
Ou...ou — disjunção correlativa (either...or)
To present two exclusive options, Portuguese pairs ou with a second ou: "cada atleta ou utiliza dois remos... ou um remo só." This mirrors English "either...or," but Portuguese doesn't need an equivalent to "either" — the first ou does that job on its own.
| Estrutura | Exemplo |
|---|---|
Note the difference: a single ou in a question just offers a choice ("dupla ou simples?"), while the doubled ou...ou structure explicitly frames two mutually exclusive possibilities within one statement.
Vocabulário do remo olímpico
Rowing (remo) has its own precise vocabulary for boat types and crew roles:
| Palavra | O que é | Exemplo do diálogo |
|---|---|---|
| remada | stroke (the rowing motion) | o ritmo das remadas |
Acento tônico em palavras terminadas em -eiro/-eira
Notice companheiros and timoneiro: both are paroxytone (stress on the second-to-last syllable) and both end in the diphthong -eiro. This is one of the most productive word-endings in Portuguese for professions and roles: companheiro (companion), timoneiro (coxswain), cozinheiro (cook), jardineiro (gardener).
Practice the diphthong carefully — it glides from a closed "e" into a short "i" sound: com-pa-NHEI-ros, ti-mo-NEI-ro. English cognates rarely preserve this glide, so it's worth isolating and repeating slowly.

Free production — Eu sempre gostei mais de...
