| A | Você sabe até que horas eles vão precisar da sala? | Do you know how long they will need the room? |

Ir + Infinitivo — Expressing Future Plans
The most common way to talk about future plans and intentions in Brazilian Portuguese is ir (conjugated) + infinitivo. It's the equivalent of English going to + verb. This dialogue is packed with examples — notice how the object pronoun can attach directly to the infinitive with a hyphen (usá-la).
| Subject | Ir (present) | + Infinitivo | Example from the dialogue |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | vou | + verb | "Não sei, mas vou verificar." |
| você / ele / ela | vai | + verb | "Carlinhos vai usá-la amanhã de manhã." |
| nós | vamos | + verb | "Queremos revisar o orçamento." (→ vamos revisar) |
| eles / elas | vão | + verb | "Eles vão usá-la até o almoço." |
Note: Usá-la = usar + a (ela) — in written and formal speech, the direct object pronoun attaches to the infinitive. In casual speech, Brazilians often say simply "vão usar ela". Both are correct in different registers.
Negation: Put não before ir: "Hoje não vai dar mesmo" — Today it's just not going to work out.
"A senhora" e "O senhor" — Formal Address in Brazilian Workplaces
In this dialogue, Antônio consistently calls his boss a senhora — not você. This is the formal register used in many Brazilian professional settings, particularly when speaking to someone of higher status. It's the equivalent of addressing someone as ma'am or sir in English.
| Context | How to address | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Casual / peers | você | "Você sabe o horário da reunião?" |
| Formal / senior colleague | a senhora / o senhor | "A senhora quer que eu faça a reserva?" |
| Customer service (shops, hotels) | a senhora / o senhor | "O senhor gostaria de ver o cardápio?" |
| Elderly person (any context) | a senhora / o senhor | "Posso ajudar a senhora?" |
Key rule: When using a senhora / o senhor, the verb takes the 3rd person singular form — same as ele/ela: "A senhora quer…?", "O senhor prefere…?"
Tip: Not sure which to use? In professional and service contexts, starting with a senhora / o senhor and waiting for the other person to invite a more casual register ("pode me chamar de você") is always the safer choice.
