Pretérito Imperfeito — hábitos e estados no passado
This dialogue is a perfect place to contrast two past tenses. Pretérito perfeito describes single, completed actions: "eu tentei", "você só disse isso." Pretérito imperfeito, on the other hand, describes ongoing states or repeated habits: "quando era jovem participava muito," "gostava mais do trampolim," "nunca executava bem."

Rule of thumb: if you can add "sempre" or "toda vez" to the sentence without changing its meaning, it's imperfeito. If the action happened once and is finished, it's perfeito.

Diving (saltos ornamentais) has very specific vocabulary for judging technique:

Acento tônico em palavras terminadas em -al / -ais
Notice that ornamentais is stressed on the last syllable: or-na-men-TAIS. Portuguese words ending in -al (singular) or -ais (plural) are almost always stressed on that final syllable — very different from many English cognates, which often stress an earlier syllable ("ornamental" in English stresses the third syllable).
Practice with other -al/-ais words you may already know: pessoal / pessoais, normal / normais, legal — always with the stress landing on that last syllable.
