Período hipotético — se + imperfeito do subjuntivo + condicional
To talk about an unreal or unlikely hypothesis ("if I could...", "if we ran..."), Portuguese pairs the imperfeito do subjuntivo in the "se" clause with the condicional (futuro do pretérito) in the result clause: "Se você pudesse ser atleta... em que esporte seria?" and "se a gente corresse juntas eu poderia passar o bastão."

This structure is the go-to pattern for daydreaming, giving advice diplomatically, or imagining a scenario that's unlikely or purely hypothetical — very different from a real, likely condition (which would use "se + presente do indicativo").

Ditongo nasal -ão
Notice bastão and the related word nacional (from nação). The nasal diphthong -ão is always stressed (oxítona) and always nasal — the sound glides from a nasalized "a" into a nasalized "u/w" sound, entirely through the nose. It's one of the most distinctive sounds in Portuguese and has no real equivalent in English.
Practice: bas-TÃO, na-ÇÃO, cora-ÇÃO, então. Keep the sound resonating in your nose all the way through the glide — don't let it collapse into an oral "ow" sound.
