Portuguese has two different possessive systems

Portuguese has two different systems for saying "my," "your," "his," "her," "our" and "their." This is the most important thing on this page.

📌 Group 1 — the ending agrees with the THING owned
masc. sing.fem. sing.masc. pluralfem. plural
eu (my)meuminhameusminhas
você / ele / ela (your, his, her)seusuaseussuas
nós (our)nossonossanossosnossas
meu irmão · minha irmã · meus irmãos · minhas irmãs
Careful, English speakers: in English, my never changes. In Portuguese, it changes four ways — and it changes with the noun that follows, never with the person speaking. A man says minha mãe. A woman says meu pai. Who is speaking makes no difference at all.
The article is optional. Both are correct and common in speech:
(A) minha família é grande. · Eu moro com (os) meus avós.
📌 Group 2 — the word agrees with the PERSON who owns
Forma
ele (his)dele = de + ele
ela (her)dela = de + ela
eles (their)deles = de + eles
elas (their)delas = de + elas

These words come after the noun, and they never change with the noun:

o pai dele · a casa dele · os primos dele · as filhas dele
📌 Compare the two systems side by side
agrees with…position
minha casathe noun (casa)before the noun
a casa delathe owner (ela)after the noun
📌 In Brazil, in practice

Look at the second row of Group 1 again: seu and sua can mean your, his or her. So this sentence has three possible meanings:

O seu irmão mora no Rio. → Your / his / her brother lives in Rio.

Because of this, Brazilians usually keep seu and sua for your, and use dele and dela for his and her. It is much clearer, and it is what you will hear every day: your brother → seu irmão · his brother → o irmão dele · her brother → o irmão dela. You will still see seu/sua meaning his/her, especially in writing — context tells you which one it is.

A minha família

Oi! Eu sou o Téo. Eu moro em Salvador, com a minha mãe e o meu irmão.

A minha mãe se chama Vera. Ela é muito legal. O meu irmão se chama Caio. Ele adora música.

O meu pai mora no Rio. A casa dele é pequena, mas é muito bonita.

Os meus avós moram em Salvador também. A minha avó se chama Zilda e o meu avô se chama Sebastião. Eu amo os meus avós!

Eu tenho duas primas. Elas se chamam Duda e Nina. Elas moram no Rio. O pai delas é o meu tio Rui.

E nós temos um cachorro. O nome dele é Bili. O Bili é o nosso cachorro, mas ele adora a minha avó!

Nota cultural. No Brasil, a família é muito importante. Os avós, os tios e os primos são da família — não só o pai, a mãe e os filhos. Muitas famílias moram na mesma cidade. Nas festas, a família toda está na casa dos avós. Os primos são quase irmãos.
