Describing a home renovation step by step, with the voz passiva — the natural way to say what was done without always saying who did it.

Voz passiva — describing what was (or will be) done

📌 1. How the passive voice is formed

ser (in the appropriate tense) + particípio passado — and the participle agrees in gender and number with the subject.

Ativa: Os pedreiros derrubaram a parede. The workers knocked down the wall.
Passiva: A parede foi derrubada (pelos pedreiros). The wall was knocked down (by the workers).
📌 2. Why use the passive?

We use the passive voice when the action matters more than who did it — very common when talking about a renovation, since we're usually more interested in what changed than in naming every worker. The agent (pelos pedreiros, pela arquiteta...) is optional and often left out.

📌 3. Which tense of "ser"?

Use foi / foram for finished work, and será / serão for work that is still planned.

O piso foi trocado semana passada. The floor was replaced last week. (done)
A coifa será instalada semana que vem.The extractor hood will be installed next week. (planned)
📌 4. Irregular particípios you'll need
Common irregular participles for talking about renovations
InfinitivoParticípio
fazerfeito
refazerrefeito
abriraberto
cobrircoberto

Practical note: for a renovation like this, Brazilians usually hire either an empreiteira (a company that manages the whole project and workers) or individual pedreiros/eletricistas autônomos hired separately and coordinated by the homeowner or the architect — the second option is often cheaper but takes more of the owner's time to manage.
