📘

Plural: + S

The simplest plural rule in Portuguese

📌 Look at the note again
ovo → ovos
tomate → tomates
cebola → cebolas
banana → bananas
iogurte → iogurtes

When a word ends in a vowel (a, e, i, o, u), add -s.

C

Singular → Plural

Write the plural form

Escreva a forma plural.

Careful: some words stay in the singular. On a shopping list, these words do not take a plural form: arroz · feijão · leite · açúcar · café · sal. We count the container or the weight instead: um quilo de arroz, dois litros de leite.
D

Complete

Complete with the correct form of the word in parentheses

Complete com a forma correta da palavra entre parênteses. Cuidado — algumas palavras não mudam.

Pronunciation. Some words with -o change the vowel sound in the plural: ovo (closed o) → ovos (open o). Read the pair aloud. The same happens with porco → porcos.

Modelo

Lista da Júlia
quatorze ovos
dezesseis bananas
um quilo de arroz
doze tomates

Nota cultural. No Brasil, muita gente compra frutas, verduras e legumes na feira livre, não só no supermercado. A feira acontece um dia fixo por semana, sempre no mesmo lugar. Lá é comum comprar por peso — um quilo de tomate — ou por dúzia — uma dúzia de ovos, ou seja, doze unidades — em vez de comprar cada item separadamente.
