Before any grammar: feel the tense. This is the opening of one of the most famous poems in the Portuguese language, written in 1857. Brazilians learn it at school — it is the sound of missing your childhood.
Oh! que saudades que tenho
Da aurora da minha vida,
Da minha infância querida
Que os anos não trazem mais!
Que amor, que sonhos, que flores,
Naquelas tardes fagueiras,
À sombra das bananeiras,
Debaixo dos laranjais!
aurora = dawn, the beginning · fagueiras = gentle, pleasant · laranjais = orange groves
Portuguese has two main past tenses. You already know the pretérito perfeito (falei, comi, fui) — the past of completed events. The pretérito imperfeito is different: it is the past of how things used to be. Use it for:
🖼️ Describing the past
How things, people and places were — like painting a picture.
Em 2005, a internet era muito lenta.
In 2005, the internet was very slow.
🔁 Habits and repeated actions
Things you used to do — again and again.
Aos sábados, eu alugava filmes na locadora.
On Saturdays, I used to rent movies at the video store.
Good news: the imperfeito is one of the most regular tenses in Portuguese. Verbs in -AR take -ava; verbs in -ER and -IR take the same endings: -ia.
| falar | comer | assistir | |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | falava | comia | assistia |
| você / ele / ela | falava | comia | assistia |
| nós | falávamos | comíamos | assistíamos |
| vocês / eles / elas | falavam | comiam | assistiam |
In this first part, you only need two irregular verbs — and they are the most important ones:
| ser | ter | |
|---|---|---|
| eu | era | tinha |
| você / ele / ela | era | tinha |
| nós | éramos | tínhamos |
| vocês / eles / elas | eram | tinham |
The whole tense has only four irregular verbs in total — you will meet vir and pôr in part 2.
Complete the text with the verbs in the pretérito imperfeito. This is how life used to be — not so long ago!
[Texto elaborado para fins didáticos]
Em 2005, eu (ter) doze anos. A internet (ser) discada e muito lenta: a gente (esperar) vários minutos para abrir uma foto. Ninguém (ter) smartphone. Eu (conversar) com meus amigos no MSN depois da escola. Aos sábados, nós (alugar) filmes na locadora e minha mãe (fazer) pipoca. Quando o telefone fixo (tocar), todo mundo (correr) para atender.
Life changed! Complete the second sentence with the verb in parentheses in the imperfeito.
Choose the correct form. Remember: ser describes what something was; ter says what someone had.
Now it's your turn to feel a little saudade. Answer in Portuguese, using the imperfeito. Write 2–3 sentences for each question — your teacher will give you personalized feedback.
1. Quando você era criança, o que você fazia depois da escola?
2. Como era a sua casa ou o seu bairro?
3. O que existia na sua infância que não existe mais hoje?
