levar
to take (away from here, towards there)
Levar = movement away from the speaker towards another place. Think of it as "take away." The speaker is not at the destination.
- Você pode levar a mamãe na consulta médica?Can you take mom to the doctor's appointment? (you are here, the clinic is elsewhere)
- Alguém pode levar os guardanapos?Can someone take the napkins? (Lucas is at his house — they go away from him, to the party)
- Ela levou a vovó para a festa.She took grandma to the party. (from grandma's place → party)
- Não leva guarda-chuva — não vai chover.Don't take an umbrella — it's not going to rain.
- O time levou o troféu pra casa.The team took the trophy home.
trazer
to bring (towards the speaker, towards here)
Trazer = movement towards the speaker's location. Think of it as "bring here." The speaker is at the destination, or is asking someone to come to them.
- Bê, você traz a salada de frutas?Bê, will you bring the fruit salad? (Marcos speaks from the party house — movement towards him)
- Não esquece de trazer o presente!Don't forget to bring the present! (Ana is at the party house — movement towards her)
- Trouxe presentes do Brasil.I brought presents from Brazil. (brought here, to where you are now)
- Pode trazer a conta?Can you bring the bill? (at a restaurant — the waiter comes to you)
- Traz aquele queijo que a vovó adora.Bring that cheese grandma loves. (said from the party house — Beatriz, at her own home, answers: "Levo sim!")
pegar
to grab / pick up / get / take / catch
Pegar is not about direction — it's about obtaining, grabbing, or picking something up. It has several uses that English covers with different verbs.
- Vou pegar o bolo na confeitaria.I'll pick up the cake at the bakery. (go get it)
- Peguei os refrigerantes no mercado.I got / picked up the sodas at the supermarket.
- Pego o gelo na hora.I'll grab the ice on the way / at the time.
- Vou passar na loja só pra pegar o novo iPhone da vovó.I'll stop by the store just to pick up grandma's new iPhone. (collect a purchase that's ready)
- Pega as chaves na gaveta.Grab the keys from the drawer.
- Vou pegar um Uber.I'll take / get an Uber. (use transportation)
- Pega o ônibus na esquina.Take the bus at the corner. (board transportation)
- Peguei um resfriado.I caught a cold. (contract an illness)
- Você pode pegar as crianças na escola?Can you pick the kids up from school?

Atenção — Erros Comuns
⚠ Cuidado
- "Bring" is not always trazer. When you take something away from where you are, use levar: "I'll bring my car" (= I'll bring it to you) → Vou levar o meu carro (not trazer, if you're driving away to meet someone).
- "Take" is not always levar. "Take the bus" → pegar o ônibus (not levar — you're boarding, not transporting the bus).
- "Get" is almost always pegar. "Get a taxi," "get the groceries," "get a cold" → pegar um táxi, pegar as compras, pegar um resfriado.
- Levar vs. trazer depends on YOUR position. If you're at the party asking someone to come: traz guardanapos. If you're at home about to leave: levo guardanapos.
